The Patient Safety Charter for

aseptic technique

On the 31st October 2025, the Association will be launching a Patient Safety Charter for Aseptic Technique at our international Conference in London.

Too many patients continue to suffer serious harm and death from preventable infections acquired as a result of healthcare interactions.

Unlike the clinical competency of CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), aseptic technique training is NOT mandatory in the NHS or Private Sector in the UK. This is the same in most countries internationally. Whilst the importance of CPR training is not in doubt, the lack of mandatory training for aseptic technique is very much questioned; Mandatory training for aseptic technique would almost certainly have more beneficial impact on patient safety and clinical outcome than CPR. Patients need both!

The Charter sets out for patients what we consider to be minimal requirements for staff education and assessment in aseptic technique. The organisational factors in the Charter, reflect existing legal requirements of all health care providers in the England and Wales (Health & Social Care Act 2009/2015). With this initiative, we encourage all health care organisations to meet these requirements and especially to make aseptic training Mandatory for all clinical staff that perform invasive clinical procedures, or maintain indwelling medical devices.

Health Care Organisations that consider they meet these patient safety requirements, can assure patients of their commitment to patient safety by proudly displaying the Charter Posters. (Downloadable left).

The Charter is supported by two short patient information videos available below:

What to look out for?

This short video, helps patients know what are the most important aspects of aseptic technique and ANTT, to look out for when receiving clinical care. If you are concerned that practice isn’t quite right, we encourage you to discuss it with your health care professional.
